Caroline heads for the hills to reduce loneliness in later life

 

In full preparation-mode to take on the Best For Ages 17-mile hike through Derbyshire's finest countryside and industrial heritage, Live at Home Scheme Manager Caroline Bruno explains why she decided to take on this thrilling charity challenge and what the money she raises will be spent on...

 

Caroline said: “I have decided to take part in the High Peak Trail Hike to help end loneliness for vulnerable, older people living across the UK. As a Live at Home Scheme Manager I have seen first-hand how enabling people to have fun, make new friends and share positive life experiences can improve health and wellbeing. As families and communities become more mobile so do they become more fragmented and this has led to a record number of older people being socially isolated and alone. This is so avoidable - no one should be alone!

 

“Our schemes provide services to local older people ranging from lunch clubs to arts and dance groups. They support individuals who are in good health and looking to get greater fulfilment from life to those frailest and vulnerable older people who need support to live well for longer. Live at Home Schemes also support older adults in their own home and in a community setting through befriending services.

 

“Although a little apprehensive, I am really looking forward to taking part in the 17 mile High Peak Trail Hike - it will be the furthest I have ever hiked. However I will gain motivation on the day by knowing that I am giving older people in our communities an opportunity for friendship, to be an active member of their community and to have improved wellbeing.

 

The money that I will raise will help fund disability enabled transport, which will enable older people to leave their homes, activities; groups and day trips. Additionally, the funding will help to enable those with poor physical or mental health, who require additional support, to have enjoyment and to experience new things.

 

“It is important to remember that older people want many of the same things as those younger than them - to live life to the full and to be surrounded by friends.”
